Building upon the successful efforts of our Junior sailing program over the years, Vancouver Lake Sailing Club is proud to announce the creation of a new Sailing School Program for 2008.

The 2008 Sailing School will bring some exciting new changes to the club. For this first year, the program will offer a series of Level 1 classes in three different age categories: Junior (8-12 years), Youth (13-18), and Family (13+), and Level II Junior classes (8-12 years).

All classes will be taught in a fun and safe manner by US Sailing-certified instructors. Classes will have 20 hours of instruction time, both on land and on the water. Junior classes will have a maximum enrollment of 8 students, and the adult and youth classes will have a maximum enrollment of 10 students. The cost is $180.00 per student. The schedule for the classes is shown below and can also be found on our website calendar. The objectives of all Level 1 classes are to give the students the theory and practical skills necessary to:
  • rig your boat for launching
  • safely launch your boat
  • sail your boat both upwind, downwind and perform basic maneuvers
  • dock and retrieve your boat
  • basic boat care and maintenance

This year's program
The 2008 program began with the Adult class taught using our club's four freshly upgraded Flying Juniors. The FJ is a 2-person boat and is a longtime training boat of choice for most sailing schools. On Sunday, May 18, the Sailing School held an award ceremony and BBQ for the adult class participants, family, friends, and club members.

The Junior and Youth classes began the week of June 16-20. Students enrolled in either a morning class or an afternoon class (but not both). Identical classes ran the following week, June 23rd-27th, for a new set of students. All Junior lessons are taught in our new fleet of O'pen Bics. The club has just purchased six of these boats specifically for our training program and have proven to be a hit with the students. The Bic resembles a small laser, with a roto-molded planing hull, self bailing cockpit, and clear mylar sail. All Youth lessons are taught using the club's FJs.
